Move Forward Staten Island (MFSI) is a non-partisan Staten Island-based organization focused on moving social justice issues forward in our community through civic engagement, education, grassroots organizing, and policy advocacy.

Founded in 2016 following the presidential election by local attorney Julienne Verdi, the organization mobilized Staten Islanders to attend the inaugural Women’s March in New York City as its first public action. Since that groundbreaking event, MFSI has held trainings, educational forums, and advocacy events on topics such as allyship, climate change, women’s rights, the importance of the community boards, and the Constitutional Convention in New York State.

As a lead organizer of the Staten Island People’s Climate March in April 2017, MFSI assembled one of the largest mass demonstrations in Staten Island history. Since then, MFSI has organized and participated in rallies in support of a variety issues including the Affordable Care Act, HALT Solitary Confinement Act, and Climate and Community Protection Act, and in opposition to the separation of children and families at the border.

MFSI members have collected and delivered hundreds of petitions and postcards on key legislation to elected officials on the state and federal level and have generated countless calls in support or against legislation. In addition, Move Forward Staten Island has organized community-based fundraisers to support other local non-profit organizations including Planned Parenthood of New York City, La Colmena, and El Centro del Inmigrante.

In 2018 MFSI expanded its leadership by welcoming seven new members to its Board of Directors, nearly tripling its size with eleven members total. MFSI looks forward to standing together to advocate for a better Staten Island.
